The Porta-Flex Story, continued

Steve Harris with horse in Porta-Flex penI went out to my arena and began putting together what I had just seen. It took some experimenting to get the right fabric and rope and stakes, but within a few months the product was ready to file for a patent.

From there doors began to open to go around to different places and demonstrate what I had learned from Ray Hunt, Buck Brannaman, Pat Parelli and Dennis Reis about natural horsemanship. My main goal was to teach people to communicate with horses.

It only takes about an hour to set up a 50’ diameter pen and it is so lightweight and easy to haul that I took a Porta-Flex with me where ever I went. In the beginning I had a small Ford Fairmont car with a luggage rack on top for the Porta-Flex. With my saddle and tools in the trunk and a change of clothes and a bed roll in the back seat, I began going around wherever I could find someone who needed help with horses.

Over the next few years I had opportunity to work with over 1,000 horses from draft horses to miniatures and everything in between. I went to many BLM wild horse adoptions and set up the Porta-Flex and would gentle a horse publicly and this would get me in touch with people who wanted help. I would then go to their place and set up the pen; right next to their wild horse’s pen and get the horse into the Porta-Flex and gentle it.

Steve Harris with horseDoors began to open wider for more opportunities to show the Porta-Flex to people and I have been coast-to-coast and border-to-border of the United States and have been as far as France, Spain, Ireland and up into Canada as far as Calgary.

In 1996 I started going to the Indian reservations to catch wild horses off the range and gentle them in the Porta-Flex. My first demonstration was on the Navajo Nation and then I met some people on the Hopi Nation and spent several months trapping and gentling horses there. I later met some people on the Tohono O’odham Nation and arranged a demonstration with some wild horses that we trapped and brought them into an arena and gentled them publicly.

One time I started a school where I used 4 head of wild horses and three students and we spent 3 weeks together. At graduation they got the horse that they had worked with and a 50’ Porta-Flex round pen. We will do that again someday when the Lord supplies the right property & the right people.

I continue to this day to do as God said on August 20, 1988 Teach people to communicate with horses, they will be able to better communicate with each other and some will come to communicate with me.” As you read this, I ask you,” Are you one who God is speaking to and wanting to communicate with?”

Listening for God's voice and obeying when He speaks will cause you to be in the right place at the right time, to live a life of peace and purpose. I invite you to contact me.
