Horse Whisperer Diary -- week #1

Saturday morning I had the alarm set for 4 AM so I could go to Queen Creek to pick up my new horse for the challenge. About 3:30 I had a dream and we were having a horse naming contest. One name was given to call him Bay Boy another suggestion was Moon Dog. I woke up and Jesus spoke to me to name him Luke 3:16. I thought, shouldn't it be John 3:16, For God so Loved the world that He gave his only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. Jesus said, "John 3:16 is already famous, I want to make Luke 3:16 famous."
I got up and checked to see what Luke 3:16 was. You will see it quoted on the web site.

I drove to QC and Luke was in a 50 ft. round pen with another horse that he had probably been with for quite awhile. He had at least ridden from Ridgecrest and spend the night with him. They did not want to be separated. I tried all the things that have worked for years to get them separated and finally had to load both horses into my trailer and back it up to another stock trailer to get them separated.

Luke and Coco Driving home was uneventful as was getting Luke unloaded into the Porta-Flex that was to be his new home. I first got my mare, Maggie, to put in with him to see how they would get along. Maggie was way to cranky so I got Coco, Lyn's BLM Burro, and they get along just fine.

The first 5 sessions with Luke have been interesting and he is getting to feel very much at home here with us, however I have not been able to actually touch him yet. I have been within 2 inches from him with my hand, but he can't stand to have me touch him. He has touched me but he quickly leaves. I know I could rope him and hold him now, but I want to wait and have him accept me as a friend.

I set up a triangle of cones about 10 ft in from the fence in a 50 ft diameter round pen and sent him around the pen between the fence and the cones. Then on the next round each time we came to a cone we made a 360 degree circle around the cone, then on to the next cone and did the same. After completing the circles we cut straight across the pen and changed directions and repeated the same exercises. I wanted to demonstrate how horses communicate with each other so people could learn to communicate with horses.

Steve uses bamboo stickThat is what Jesus told me to do on Aug 20, 1988 and what I have done ever since.

I have used a bamboo stick to touch him all over and can move him around any place I want to put him and he is thinking clearly and not in fear. It is just that last last 2 inches that we need to get through.

I hope you enjoy the website and we are praying to sell many Porta-Flex pens so we can help lots of people enjoy the BLM horses and all horses of all breeds.

Check back weekly to see Luke's progress. View my slideshow of the training exercises.
